What were your first influences? Iain McKinnon: The biggest influence on my work is Romero, I think that’s obvious when you read Domain of the Dead or Remains of the Dead. But it was the remake of Dawn of the Dead that started me writing about a zombie apocalypse. I loved the movie but being a Romero purist I wasn’t keen on the running zombies. They worked well in the film but I felt you didn’t need to up the anti to keep zombies frightening. On a more physical level I remember seeing things like Threads and Z for Zechariah when I was a boy. I’d then walk to school with my parker zipped up like Kenny from South Park as I wandered round this dead world, passing off other people in street as mere hallucinations generated by a solitude crazed mind. Swedish Zombie: How do you look upon the zombies? What do they mean to you? Are they metaphors, or simply cool monsters? Iain McKinnon: I like the zombie as a metaphor but I’m not going to step on a readers imagination and say out right what metaphors I think they represent. The way metaphors work is you add your own interruption. A good metaphor works at different levels at different times for different people. Swedish Zombie: Zombie enthusiasts are often conservative. How much do you think that one should experiment with the concept? Iain McKinnon: I’m happy for others to bring to it what they like but for me I feel there’s enough space to play with in the cannon as it stands. The story is the important thing and for me and for me it’s always been about the Romero zombie. It’s simply what I like. Swedish Zombie: It is often hard to pick favorites, perhaps it is simply foolish to try. But are there two or three books in modern zombie fiction that you think has meant something extra for the genre? Iain McKinnon: Max Brooks Zombie survival guide and World war Z both stand out. They hit the shelf at just the right time to spark and fuel the latest zombie resurgence. But yeah it’s hard to pick favorites. I’m a big fan of David Moody’s Autumn series. And having devoured Permuteds early releases Day by Day Armageddon, Twilight of the Dead and Plague of the Dead all influenced my own writing. Swedish Zombie: How do you consider the genre’s future? Zombies seem to be viable. Can this peek last and if so what is then required by the authors? Iain McKinnon: Short answer is don’t know. I’ve been expecting the zombie wave to crash any moment since 2007 so it shows you what I know. Zombies keep going from strength to strength. I guess when you have fans like me eager for the next undead film or novel or computer game there’s always going to be a market there. It may not be mainstream but markets no longer need mainstream to survive any longer. With the advent of computers and the internet the niche market is king. I hope to see a long and prosperous life for zombies even it is just because I love them. Swedish Zombie: A good book is always right. Some writers want to renew, others strive to convey an already well-known story with his oh hers unique twist. How do you look upon your own writings? Iain McKinnon: I want to write the books I’d like to read. I find reading most writers work difficult. It may be my dyslexia, it may be my arrogance but I want to write books that people can get hooked on. Something that pulls the reader in makes them forget they’re eve reading a book. Swedish Zombie: Through the ages, writers and directors stuck to various explanations for the end of the world: infections from space, environmental degradation, military experiments, terrorism etc. Which scenario behind the zombie apocalypse do you think is most interesting / believable at the moment? Iain McKinnon: We will drill a hole down through a frozen Antarctic lake and discover an ecosystem which has been evolving independently of our own for 4 million years. Amongst that flora will be something that can use us as a host even once we have died from the infection. Just my guess. But hey all of the above are viable. Swedish Zombie: What will you write in the future? What stories remain in you, do you think? Is there anything in particular you feel like writing? Iain McKinnon: Tons is the answer to that. I have a plethora of stories in me yet, a Sci-Fi called From the Torment of Dreams that is almost ready, an occult thriller which is approaching the end of the first draft, a possible third zombie novel, and a few others in the works. .
