What were your first influences? Tony Faville: I started writing in 2009, when my wife brought the National Novel Writing Month to my attention. It takes place every November and the sole purpose is to get people writing by making it a contest to write a 50,000 word novel during the month. If you write the 50,000 words, you are a winner. I thought it sounded interesting and the next thing I know, I succeeded and made the decision to self-publish. After a year of successful sales, I was contacted by Permuted Press, and the next thing I know, I have a publishing contract. As for my first influences, it all begins with George Romero, but then jumps to David Moody, David Wellington and Jonathan Maberry. Swedish Zombie: How do you look upon the zombies? What do they mean to you? Are they metaphors, or simply cool monsters? Tony Faville: Zombies are definite metaphors but at the same time, they are cool monsters as well. Simply put, zombies are us. They have but one desire, and that is to feed and propagate their ”species”. We work day to day so we can feed, keep a roof over our heads and propagate our species . Swedish Zombie: Zombie enthusiasts are often conservative. How much do you think that one should experiment with the concept? Tony Faville: I believe that there are certain aspects of the zombie genre that absolutely must remain unchanged. With that said, how the zombie outbreak begins, and the behavior of the zombies is totally up for change and can be made into anything you so desire. Swedish Zombie: It is often hard to pick favorites, perhaps it is simply foolish to try. But are there two or three books in modern zombie fiction that you think has meant something extra for the genre? Tony Faville: Number one for me would have to be Autumn by David Moody. It was truly the first zombie novel I ever read, and is still one of my all time favorites. Number two would have to be World War Z by Max Brooks. While he and I may have severely differing opinions on some things, WWZ was a well written, and thoroughly enjoyable novel. Swedish Zombie: How do you consider the genre's future? Zombies seem to be viable. Can this peek last and if so what is then required by the authors? Tony Faville: Zombies definitely have a future, but I think it will drift out of being mainstream as it has become in recent years, and will go back to being for those of us that have been fans of the genre LONG before they went mainstream. What that means for us zombie authors is that we will have to double our efforts at writing something new, while being careful of our more knowledgeable and expectant readers. Swedish Zombie: A good book is always right. Some writers want to renew, others strive to convey an already well-known story with his oh hers unique twist. How do you look upon your own writings? Tony Faville: I tend to do my very best to bring something new with everything I write. I also try to bring other things into the genre that is not usually expected, humor, sentimentality, etc. Swedish Zombie: Through the ages, writers and directors stuck to various explanations for the end of the world: infections from space, environmental degradation, military experiments, terrorism etc. Which scenario behind the zombie apocalypse do you think is most interesting / believable at the moment? Tony Faville: Recently, scientists foolishly figured out how to make the dreaded avian flu the deadliest disease on the face of the planet. This in itself could bring a definite change to the way we live, but would not bring about zombies. I have to admit, I don’t ever see actual zombies coming to be, but I can definitely see a plague such as in 28 Days Later. Swedish Zombie: What will you write in the future? What stories remain in you, do you think? Is there anything in particular you feel like writing? Tony Faville: I am currently writing a new novel titled Run… that will be bringing a new twist on the behavior of the zombies themselves, and the way that we have to fight them. I have also recently been invited to submit a story to a Western (Cowboy) Horror anthology. I will continue to write as long as fresh ideas keep coming to me.
